Types and Shadows: Intimations of Divinity

“Types and Shadows: Intimations of Divinity” will be on display in the Museum of Art from Sept. 17, 2009, to March 13, 2010. Using the structures of metaphor and analogy from the language of the scriptures, this exhibition of traditional and contemporary works will enlighten the hearts and the minds of viewers as they participate in the process of seeking out and unraveling the types and shadows contained in these works that “point to” the Savior’s divine mission. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.,Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

International Education Week: World Fest

Students, faculty and community members are invited to participate in the events. A complete schedule of events is available online at internationalservices.byu.edu.

The festivities will commence at noon Tuesday in the WSC Garden Court with an opening ceremony featuring a Chinese dragon and cultural performances by Living Legends. Visitors may then enjoy daily performances at noon, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., may visit the 40 cultural booths and learn firsthand from BYU's international students.

On Thursday at 5 p.m., visitors can savor authentic cuisine from around the world at the popular Food Fest in the WSC Garden Court. The fare will include Brazilian feijoada, Japanese sushi, Mexican tamales, French eclairs and German strudel. Dishes are nominally priced between 50 cents and $1, and tickets may be purchased at the door.

A three-course banquet and international entertainment extravaganza featuring students in their traditional dress will bring the week's celebration to a close Friday at 6:30 p.m. in the WSC Ballroom. Tickets may be purchased at the WSC Information Desk for $10 or at the door, if not already sold out, for $12.

Museum of Peoples and Cultures Date Night

Brigham Young University's Museum of Peoples and Cultures, located on 700 North 100 East in Provo, will host a date night where couples can learn about other cultures and traditions through ancient pottery Friday, Nov. 20, at 6 and 8 p.m.

Tickets for the event are $10 per couple and can be purchased at the Wilkinson Student Center Information Desk beginning Nov. 16.

In addition to learning about Anasazi pottery from Fourmile Ruin in the MPC's "New Lives" exhibition, participants will see examples of pottery from other parts of the world and discover how much it can teach them about the people who made and used it.

The evening also includes "Cultural Trivia," scavenger hunts and an opportunity for participants to make their own pottery. Refreshments will be provided.

A Night of Clay, Pots, and Play

A special event for couples will be held in as part of “International Education Week.” The Museum of Peoples and Cultures (MPC) will host a date night where couples can learn about other cultures on Friday, November 20th at 6:00 and 8:00 p.m.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote opportunities to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. The David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies (http://kennedy.byu.edu/events/IEW/index.php) will be sponsoring activities throughout campus for this week. The MPC will participate by hosting this date night focused on pottery from around the world.

“This event is a great way to explore other cultures and their traditions through their pottery,” said Anna McKean, promotions manager at the MPC. “It’d be hard to find a date night like this anywhere else.”

Participants will not only learn about the beautiful Anasazi pottery from Four mile Ruin in the MPC’s “New Lives” exhibition, but will see examples of pottery from other parts of the world and discover how much it can teach us about the people who made and used it. Burt Lancaster's "Flame and the Arrow"

"The Flame and the Arrow," the 1950s Technicolor adventure, will be screened at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but early arrival is encouraged as seating is limited. No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium, and children ages 8 and older are welcome. BYU dress standards apply. BYU curator James V. D'Arc will introduce the film.

In "The Flame and the Arrow," Burt Lancaster stars as Dardo, an Italian Robin Hood, who leads oppressed villagers against Hessian invaders, commanded by the dreaded Count Ulrich. Virginia Mayo co-stars as the niece of the Hessian invader and who falls in love with Dardo. The film includes an inspiring musical score by Academy Award-winner Max Steiner, whose papers and memorabilia are housed in BYU's L. Tom Perry Special Collections.

The screening is part of the continuing BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series, co-sponsored by Special Collections, the Friends of the Harold B. Lee Library and Dennis and Linda Gibson. All films in the series are shown from original film prints.

Film-The Flame and the Arrow. This 1950 classic film stars Burt Lancaster and Virginia Mayo. Doors open at 6:30, show begins at 7:00 in the library auditorium. Admission is free.

"Evening of Percussion"

Brigham Young University student groups Panoramic Steel, Percussion Ensemble and Gamelan Bintang Wahyu will be joining in an "Evening of Percussion" Friday, Nov. 20, in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Gamelan Bintang Wahyu performs Balinese music from the Indonesian culture. Established in 2008 by Jeremy Grimshaw, it is the first Gamelan group at BYU and in Utah. The students perform on instruments that are handcrafted by Balinese tuners and carvers in the shop of I Wayan Beratha, Bali's most revered composer and instrument builder. They will be performing "Time and Eternity" by BYU faculty composer Christian Asplund and "Hujan Mas" by Gede Purana.

The Percussion Ensemble performs a variety of pieces with a number of different percussion instruments. They also perform music from a wide variety of genres, including popular classics and modern avant-garde. They will be performing "Promise Music" by Clif Walker, "Big Country" by Bela Fleck and "Waldstein Piano Sonata" by Ludwig van Beethoven.

Panoramic Steel is a steel drum ensemble using standard instruments from Trinidad. It has a large repertoire that includes numbers from genres such as traditional calypso, Soca, Brazilian and popular modern music. The ensemble will be performing "Flamingo Jump" by director and BYU School of Music faculty member Ron Brough, "Dee Mwa Wee" by Andy Narell and "Rainorma" by Aldwyn Roberts.
