Unique BYU art exhibit celebrates professor's legacy

An art exhibit featuring the art work of several Brigham Young University alumni will be featured daily in the B.F. Larsen Gallery at the Harris Fine Arts Center until Friday Nov. 13. The gallery is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day except Sunday.

The exhibition is titled "A Product of Time and Faith: Professor Hagen Haltern's Intensive Drawing Studio, 1982/2009." It features the work of Haltern, who just recently retired from the BYU visual arts faculty, and his students from 1982: Jacqui Biggs Larsen, Mark England, Bruce Robertson, Bob Adams, Anne Cordes Daines, Tom Schulte, Keri Vincent Skousen, Richard Gate and Brent Orton.

"These students studied under the tutelage of Professor Haltrem for eight hours a day, four days a week throughout an entire year," said curator James Swensen. "They learned how to experiment and explore in a way that few are able to enjoy."

Now, after 27 years, these artists are still creating in their own unique way. This exhibition details the legacy of one professor's efforts and a creative teaching that has sustained these individuals for nearly three decades.

Keith Stubbs and Laugh Out Loud

SCERA presents comedian Keith Stubbs and special guests at Laugh Out Loud Night Friday Nov. 13

(Orem, Utah) -- Keith Stubbs was a New York City stockbroker, but comedy rather than stock options and day trading captured his interest—and eventually his heart. He turned his back on the market in 1991 and has found satisfaction as a laugh-a-minute funny man who has been dubbed the best morning radio personality five times by the Utah Broadcaster’s Association.
Stubbs will bring his clean humor to the SCERA Center for the Arts for one performance, Friday Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. It will be a high energy evening filled with music and sharp and quick-witted banter – and using his life as comic fodder.
Reserved-seat tickets are available for $10 for adults and $8 for children (age 3-11), seniors (age 65+) and students (w/ID) and are available from 10am-6pm weekdays and Saturdays from 12Noon-6pm at the SCERA Center, 745 South State, by calling (801) 225-ARTS, or online at www.scera.org.
“I’ve always wanted to do comedy,” he says, “and after friends encouraged me, I started performing at open mic nights at California comedy clubs. I had some success and haven’t turned back.”
His comedy caught the attention of Eagle 101.5 country radio station five years ago, and he found a further outlet for his creativity on the air as host of the wildly popular Stubbs Morning Show. As recently as this month, the Utah Broadcaster’s Association singled him out at the best radio personality on morning radio.
While most of his performing occurs in his home state of Utah, he has been featured on A&E’s “Evening at the Improv,” Comedy Central, as a frequent special guest on the nationally syndicated “Bob and Tom Radio Show” and he has headlined at comedy clubs and festivals across the country.
“I hope people like my crazy energy and one-liners,” he says. “My show is full of them.” His fast-paced comedy style has been recognized at the prestigious Laugh Riots comedy competition, where he made it to the semi-finals.
What he especially enjoys about his shows is that each evening is different. “The audience reactions are different, and I get to control the show—for better or worse—because I am the writer, director, and producer,” he says. ”I just love it.”
As is common with his concerts, Stubbs is bringing in additional talent, and for the SCERA show that will include special guest comedians Jerry Mabbott and Heather Roundy.
“I met Keith and was so impressed with him, we’ve used him to open for some of our major talent at the SCERA Shell,” says Adam J. Robertson, SCERA’s President and CEO. “He always has something new and funny to say and we are very, very pleased he has agreed to do a full show for us.”
Before his SCERA appearance, Stubbs will be in Nashville for the 43rd annual Country Music Awards where he will use his behind-the-scenes talents and interview the country stars nominated for awards. “This is really fun, but I must emphasize, I am first and foremost a comic. That’s what I do.”

Ballet Showcase

Brigham Young University's Department of Dance will present a diverse program during "Ballet Showcase" Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13- 14, in the Dance Production Theatre, 166 Richards Building.

Tickets are available for nightly showings at 7:30 p.m. and a Saturday matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets cost $6 and are available at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322, or online at byuarts.com.

"There will be a lot of variety in this program," said company director Kalise Child. "With 14 dancers, all of whom have excellent abilities, the show will prove to be a delight."

"The Audition" choreographed by BYU's Marsha Russell, is a mini-ballet that dramatizes the various situations that occur in ballet class and at auditions, from the dancer who is always late to the prima donna who always has to be front and center.

For classical fans there are two variations from "Le Corsaire" by Petipa restaged by BYU Theatre Ballet director Shani Robison and the Spanish-styled "La Fuega Roja de La Noche" by senior member Allison Zobell, president of Ballet Showcase.

"Waltz of the Flowers," choreographed by Child, was inspired by her experiences dancing in Robert Lindgren's "Nutcracker" at the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Other new works include "Marionettes" choreographed by Child and inspired by a quote by Elder David A. Bednar: "Endowed with agency, we are agents, and we primarily are to act and not only to be acted upon -- especially as we seek to obtain and apply spiritual knowledge." "Musical Rush" by Stephanie Haymore features composer Jon Schmidt's "Love Story Meets Love Story."

"The entire company will perform the finale, 'Hungarian Suite,'" said ballet faculty member and publicity director Lynne Thompson. "It's a lively, high-energy character piece with exciting lifts and jumps. I think that a lot of people are going to enjoy this show; there is something for everyone."
